Gunnar Jeschke is Full Professor for Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He is an outstanding scientist not only in his own research but also in field of Physical Chemistry at large. His work has made significant contributions to the development of an important spectroscopic technique, the pulsed ESR. His book on pulsed ESR which has been edited by him in 2001 has developed as the standard work for this topic. Due to his work the modern ESR techniques hold an important position in the examination of disordered “soft” matter by means of spin labels. He has demonstrated a variety of applications in material science and particularly in biological science mainly if other methods with atomic resolution cannot be applied.

During his stay in Konstanz Professor Jeschke will pursue a project on method development in ESR together with Zukunftskolleg Fellow Malte Drescher. Special attention of both scientists will be turned to the organisation of an international (European) summer school on Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy. The European Federation of EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) groups (EFEPR) has assigned the organisation of this event to them both. It will take place in Konstanz at the beginning of September 2010.

Promoting up-and-coming scientists is an important concern for the former Professor for Physical Chemistry at the University of Konstanz. As an internationally renowned scientist on ESR Spectroscopy Gunnar Jeschke will be of great support to the Emmy Noether Junior Research Group of Malte Drescher. Being an experienced member of the international scientific community his Senior Fellowship in Konstanz will turn out also as a great benefit for all Fellows of the Zukunftskolleg.
