We congratulate Beatriz Puente-Ballesteros (Alumna / Dept. of History and Sociology) who was awarded the 2021 J. Worth Estes Prize at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the History of Medicine on 14 May 2021.

Within the third call for ZUKOnnect Fellowships and the first call for Zukunftskolleg Herz Fellowships eight fellowships were granted.

The Zukunftkolleg has just published calls for applications for several funding programmes open to all non-tenured researchers of the University of Konstanz.

There are two deadlines for applications for all programmes: 4 June and 5 July 2021

We congratulate Carolin Antos-Kuby who has been invited by the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Vienna for a visiting professorship in the summer semester 2021.

On 20 and 21 April, the European Institutes of Advanced Study came together virtually in their annual meeting of NetIAS (Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study) to foster cooperation between institutions and initiate new joint projects ranging from the funding programme CAT (Constructive Advanced Thinking) to the network's lecture series (European Lecture Series).

From 12-14 April 2021, the members of the UBIAS network (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study) met virtually for their biannual conference.

We congratulate Klaus Boldt (Research Fellow / Dept. of Chemistry) whose application to the Heisenberg Programme of the German Research Foundation was granted.

As part of the Zukunftskolleg’s annual day trip, on 23 March 2021 the fellows went on a virtual tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) of New York City, during which Margaret Samu explained the highlights of the museum.

We congratulate Pantelis Eleftheriou (Research Fellow / Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics) who has been awarded an EPSRC (=Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Early Career Fellowship, as well as a tenure-track position at the University of Leeds, UK.

Congratulations to Klaus Boldt! He passed his habilitation and obtained the teaching license in Physical Chemistry and Solid State Chemistry.

Two new Senior Fellows will join the Zukunftskolleg in the summer semester 2021 for a period of 12 months: Professor Graham Underwood (School of Life Sciences, University of Essex, UK) and Babu Thaliath (School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies, Centre of German Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India).

We have received 190 applications within the latest call for ZUKOnnect Fellowships (application deadline was on 24 February 2021).

We congratulate Jolle Jolles (Postdoctoral Fellow / Dept. of Biology) who has accepted a position as independent postdoctorate researcher at the Centre for Research on Ecology and Forestry Applications (CREAF) in Cerdanyola del Vallès, Spain.

In the Assembly of Members on 9 February, the fellows reelected Nihan Toprakkiran (Postdoctoral Fellow/Politics and Public Administration) and Henri Kauhanen (Postdoctoral Fellow/Linguistics) to serve for a second term of office as members in the Executive Committee.

We congratulate Paraskevi Salamaliki who has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Ioannina, Greece.

Alexander Titz (Alumnus / Dept. Chemistry) has been appointed as Professor for Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Saarland University.

The COVID 19 pandemic also poses major challenges and new questions for science. The Volkswagen Foundation responded to it with its "Corona Crisis and Beyond" funding programme, providing support to researchers of all disciplines.

The Zukunftskolleg is pleased to announce a new call for Zukunftskolleg Konnect (ZUKOnnect) Fellowships. The ZUKOnnect Fellowships support early career researchers from Africa, Asia and Latin America related to one of the thirteen departments of the University of Konstanz. Application deadline is 24 February 2021.

Abena is one of five new Postdoctoral Fellows from the 14th call for applications. She has started her fellowship digitally in September and now could join the Zukunftskolleg in person. Abena is affiliated with the Department of Literature.

Public Statement by the Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study (NetIAS)

The University of Konstanz has been recognized with the Henriette Herz Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for its active recruitment concept for excellent early career researchers from the Global South.

We congratulate Claudius Kratochwil (Fellow / Dept. of Biology) who has accepted a position as group leader at the Institute for Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki.

We congratulate Gianluca Rastellli (Research Fellow / Dept. of Physics) who has received a permanent position as scientific researcher of the Italian National Research Council (CNR, Centro Nazionale di Ricerca).

We welcome Hari Sridhar at the Zukunftskolleg. He has started his Senior Fellowship as Writer in Residence at the Zukunftskolleg – first digitally and in 2021 on campus.

We congratulate Julia Boll who has joined the Department of Language, Literature, and Media II at the University of Hamburg, as Associate Professor (Vertretungsprofessorin) for British Studies.

Thomas Böttcher has been a Research Fellow at the Zukunftskolleg and junior research group leader at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Konstanz since 2014. In October 2020 he was appointed as Professor for Microbial Biochemistry at the University of Vienna. We spoke with him about his experiences in Konstanz, his advice for the German university landscape and his plans for Vienna.
