Jour fixe: “Abuse and humiliation in the delivery room: The prevalence and impact of obstetric violence in Ghana”

Digital Jour fixe presentation by Abena Yalley on 1 December 2020.

Abstract:
Unlike other forms of gender-based violence, obstetric violence is relatively unrecognised. Defined as the violence exercised by health personnel on the body and reproductive processes of women during pregnancy or delivery, obstetric violence is a major health problem which is also associated with human rights, compromises the bodily integrity of women and could affect women’s decisions to deliver in health facilities which provide appropriate management of maternal and neonatal complications. In today’s Jour fixe, I will be examining the problem of obstetric violence on birthing and maternal health in Ghana. This will allow for actions that promote humanised birthing and continual support for women during labour and childbirth.
