Study structure

You can study mathematics as a minor in combination with a major from all the humanities disciplines or all the natural science disciplines which require either a minor or required electives.

When combining mathematics with another major in the natural sciences, the examination regulations for your major will specify the numbers of credits required for the minor.

If your major is in the humanities, mathematics as a minor has 36 ECTS credits. You may choose from the following two variations:

• Variation 1: analysis I (9 cr), linear algebra I (9 cr), analysis II (9 cr), linear algebra II (9 cr)
• Variation 2: mathematics for physicists I (9 cr), mathematics for physicists II (9 cr), modelling (5 cr), computer use in mathematics (3 cr), numerics I (10 cr)

The same general entry requirements apply for the study programmes major or minor.

Applicants with German higher education entrance qualification:

• general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification
• university entrance for working applicants without higher education entrance qualification (special provisions)

Applicants with higher education entrance qualification from abroad:

• general or subject-specific German higher education entrance qualification
• school graduation that permits higher education entrance in the home country and is recognised as equal to the German higher education entrance qualification or
• assessment test (Studienkolleg (preparatory course))

Semester fee
All students enrolled at the University of Konstanz are charged a semester fee each semester, similar to all other German universities. Here you can find the current semester fee and its individual components.

Tuition fees for first degree studies for certain international students
Since winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. The following students are not required to pay tuition fees: citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), doctoral students and certain “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German “Abitur”). Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students in accordance with the university’s “Begabtenbefreiungssatzung” (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). Tuition fees for second degree studies for all students
All students are required to pay tuition fees for their second degree studies. More detailed information can be found here.

You do not need to prove your foreign language skills to apply for the Bachelor's minor in Mathematics.

The teaching and examination languages for the Bachelor's minor in Mathematics are German and English.

You should really enjoy the subject and have a definite desire to understand relationships in the minutest detail. For this you will need endurance and determination. Whereas in school the main focus is on exercising various solution methods, during your studies you will learn to perform proofs and to understand and tackle problems. A good level of frustration tolerance, logical thinking and a systematic approach to understanding (recognising and ordering relationships) are useful in order to master the challenges involved.

Interested in a bachelor's minor in mathematics? Then we recommend participating in our mathematics pre-course (usually in September/October) before the regular start of lectures.

Application documents

During the online application process, you will need to enter various kinds of information (school grades, attendance periods etc.) and upload various PDF documents. Please make sure that you have the relevant documentation ready. This may include:

• your Abitur certificate (German general higher education entrance qualification)
• documentation of any volunteering you may have done (FSJ, FÖJ etc.)
• any documentation about vocational training you may have completed
• any other required documents (medical certificate etc.)

An electronic assistant will guide you through the application process. Required fields are marked by an asterisk (*).

An application is possible during the following period: 07.05. - 15.09. | 29.11. - 15.03.
