Questions about enrolment
What is the student health insurance all about?
You must have student health insurance while you study. This is an important pre-requisite for enrolment (§ 254 SGB V German social code).
You can be exempted from this requirement under certain circumstances. These include coverage through a parental insurance policy or private insurance. The university accepts documentation of this alternative insurance coverage as proof of student health insurance coverage. All public health insurance providers issue this documentation upon request.
If you possess a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you are not legally required to purchase additional health insurance coverage in Germany.
When do I have to pay the tuition fees as a prospective new student?
In order to enrol at the university for the first time you must pay all tuition fees and contributions. Payment deadlines can be found in the letter of admission under the key word "acceptance deadline".
What is the payment reference for applicants?
The payment reference is comprised of a 13-digit number.
It includes:
7800 + application number + semester abbreviation (e.g. "242" for the Winter Semester 2024/25)
What is the semester abbreviation?
The first two numbers represent the year in which the semester for which you are registering begins ("24" for 2024). The third number is either a "1" for the summer semester, or "2" for the winter semester.
Example of a payment reference:
7800123456242
7800: stays the same
123456: your six digit application number
242: semester abbreviation
Important: Please use a payment reference number without spaces or additional characters before or within the 13-digit number. This is necessary to ensure that your payment is processed without delay. A delay in payment might lead to you having to forfeit our offer of enrolment.
Also important: This payment reference applies only for your first (!) semester and only for accepted study applicants. If you plan on changing study programmes within the university, e.g. from a bachelor’s to a master’s programme, please read the guidelines for current students.
If you have been admitted by lot, you do not have an applicant number. In this case, the purpose of the lottery is: "Lottery WiSe2024/25 + surname and first name + information about the course of study".

As a prospective new student, what happens to me if I do not pay?

These provisions are binding for all universities in Baden-Württemberg.
