Digitalization in teaching

Digitalization in teaching focuses on two things: teaching and learning digital skills in study programmes and digitalizing teaching and learning settings. Both of these activities often go hand in hand.

One of the three key projects funded in the context of our concept University of Konstanz – creative.together is the development of a comprehensive e-science strategy. In the area of study and teaching, we address both aspects of digitalization in teaching:

• In our recently created programme, the Advanced Data Information and Literacy Track (ADILT), students from all disciplines and study programmes at the University of Konstanz can benefit from essential training on data and information literacy with a strong emphasis on reflecting on social aspects of digitalization.
• The further development of digitalization in teaching in Konstanz is supported jointly by the Office for Curricular Affairs (Student Affairs and Teaching), Academic Staff Development/University Didactics (Academic and International Affairs) and the Communication, Information, Media Centre (KIM). Our aim is to digitally enhance on-campus teaching wherever it makes sense. Since 2022, these measures have played an even greater role as we draw upon the experiences with online teaching made during the coronavirus pandemic and expand support for digitally enhanced teaching. The digitalization in teaching team works closely with the university's departments and central projects on this topic.
• The university's Teaching Innovation Fund supports the development of new, innovative teaching formats. Professors, junior professors and teaching staff may participate in this funding programme. In the area of digitally-enhanced teaching, funding is provided for testing and including online and digital media in teaching as well as for the development of digital self-study materials that can either be used on their own or as part of a blended-learning format.

Additional measures, projects and initiatives

• The focus area Digital skills for studies and career for courses offered by the Centre for Transferable Skills reflects the university's e-science strategy.Digital teaching and learning environments as well as cross-disciplinary courses promote key competencies in the area of digitalization, make teaching more varied and provide more flexible learning options for students.
• The project edu 4.0 – Digitalization in Teacher Education at the Binational School of Education (BiSE) promotes digital transformation at secondary and vocational schools. It was awarded funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the framework of the joint "Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung" of the federal and state governments, a quality enhancement campaign in teacher education. Its goals included the systematic anchoring of digitalization-related content and teaching/learning formats in teacher education programmes. The project EPASS - ePortfolio for lifelong learning is also led by the BiSE in Konstanz, using the platform Mahara for the technical implementation.
•  PePP partnership for innovative e-exams is a joint project of the nine state universities in Baden-Württemberg. The aim is to develop sustainable solutions for online exams that strengthen the competency orientation of exams and provide students with greater mobility and flexibility options while putting the learning process centre stage.
