Good nutrition lays the foundation for good health. Everything we eat influences our metabolic processes. In the best case scenario, this leads to energy production and promotes repair processes.
But what does good nutrition entail? New trends pop up every day, like clean eating, low-carb or superfoods. Most of us have lost track or gotten tired of the ever-changing landscape of tips for healthy eating.
The truth is: eating healthy is actually quite simple! Just stick to tasty, well-balanced and nutritious fare and you will contribute to your own personal well-being and health.
Basic principles of well-balanced nutrition
- Eat mainly plant-based foods. Tip: discover the new flavours of a variety of fruits and vegetables, legumes and grains (e.g. quinoa, amaranth)! Take care in choosing fruits and vegetables that are fresh, seasonal and grown in the region.
- Choose wholegrain products (e.g. wholegrain rolls, noodles and rice).
- Reducing your consumption of animal-based foods like dairy products, eggs, meat and fish. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung (German nutritional society, DGE) recommends eating just 600 grams of meat and processed meat products per week.
- Drink 1.5 to 2 litres of unsweetened liquids each day.
- Enjoy sweets in moderation and try to do without highly processed foods (e.g. convenience foods).
- And most important of all: take time to enjoy your meals, relax and have fun eating.
