The workshop "Large Language Models (LLM) for Linguists: a Practical Introduction” is aimed at researchers in linguistics and the humanities who don’t regularly work with LLMs and it is meant as a practical introduction to the topic and to conducting research with LLMs.

Abstract: This workshop provides a theoretical and practical introduction to large language models (LLMs) for researchers in the humanities and linguistics in particular. Without requiring a technical or mathematical background, the first session presents the Transformer architecture and explains how it is used in prominent LLMs like BERT and GPT. The second session uses interactive programming with a Jupyter notebook running Python 3, to show how LLMs can be concretely obtained, examined, and trained.

The notebook and instructions for running it are provided prior to the session.
