What is a FabLab?
What is a FabLab?
A fabrication laboratory, or FabLab for short, is an open workshop that provides easy access to modern manufacturing technology in the form of machines and tools. It is a space in which people are provided with both the knowledge to operate machines and the tools themselves. The machines range from standard sewing machines to 3D printers and laser cutters. They are accessible to everyone and free of charge. In a FabLab, ideas can be implemented independently, projects realised and new inspiration gained.
Fab Charter
The FabLab Konstanz is operated in accordance with the international "Fab Charter". It contains guidelines drawn up by the Fab Foundation and forms the basis for all FabLabs. The charter currently contains seven principles which, among other things, stipulate access and the responsibility of each individual.
Why a FabLab at the University of Konstanz?
The FabLab aims to actively promote interdisciplinary work and thus the transitions between disciplines, research and teaching. In addition, the aim is to promote dialogue between the university and society, business and politics.
The FabLab is part of the future Forum Konstanz and thus an essential element of the "University of Konstanz - creative.together" strategy. The structural realisation of the FabLab is already taking place in advance and is being funded by the Dr. K. H. Eberle Foundation.
