Bachelor's and master's theses generally exhibit the necessary level of independent work to have copyright protection. Seminar papers, lectures and presentations prepared by students can also fall under the same protection. This means that students, as the works’ originators, decide on their usage and teachers need to get the students’ consent before using such works. This can be done easily, for example via email. § 60a and § 51 UrhG only apply in exceptional cases, since these works are usually not published. By contrast, material created by students and shared with the corresponding course via ILIAS can be used by other participants for course purposes without the students having to give their consent.
