The program qualifies to work in a law firm or company with connections to Germany in your home country. Typical career prospects include work in the commercial sector (e.g. in industry, trade and commerce, banks, insurance companies, associations.

Study structure

The standard period of study spans over three semesters, including the Master’s examination. In the first two semesters you take courses cumulating at least 20 weekly semester hours, which should be spread equally between both semesters. One weekly semester hour equals 45 minutes. The course catalogue lists the amount of weekly semester hours for every course (abbreviated with “st”). This course (Contract Law I) encompasses 4 weekly semester hours (4st). The number of 12p (12 ECTS credits) is not relevant for the LL.M. program. It is required to take one basic lecture in Civil Law as well as one basic lecture in Public Law, which each encompass 4 weekly semester hours. The remaining 12 weekly semester hours can be chosen freely. From the special courses for international students (in the course catalogue under “J”), only 2 weekly semester hours can be credited. Equivalent courses which you already passed during your Erasmus studies at the University of Konstanz can be credited. If you passed courses encompassing 20 weekly semester hours including the required basic lectures during this time, you can apply for admission to the master’s examination directly at the beginning of your studies.

Master’s Examination
In the course of your studies (generally during the second semester), you look for a supervisor among the professors of the Department of Law, who will help you to find a suitable topic for your master’s thesis. We will help you to find a supervisor whose research focus meets your interests. At the end of the lecture period of the second semester, you apply for admission to the master’s examination along with the proof of attended courses to the extent of 20 weekly semester hours, the name of your supervisor and the topic of your thesis. The master’s examination consists of a master’s thesis with a research time of 3 months and an oral examination of 30 minutes.

Internship

An internship is not planned in the Master's programme.

Stay abroad

A stay abroad is not planned in the Master's programme.

• Admission to the program requires a law degree acquired at a university outside of Germany, which is comparable to the German legal studies in its type and duration. In general, a four year bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree which encompasses civil law, public law and criminal law and a comparable amount of legal courses will fulfill this requirement.
• International applicants  need documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-2, TestDaF 4 , telc or Goethe-Zertifikat C1, or a language test recognised as equivalent.

Semester fee
All students enrolled at the University of Konstanz are charged a semester fee each semester, similar to all other German universities. Here you can find the current semester fee and its individual components.

Tuition fees for first degree studies for certain international students
Since winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. The following students are not required to pay tuition fees: citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), doctoral students and certain “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German “Abitur”). Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students in accordance with the university’s “Begabtenbefreiungssatzung” (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). Tuition fees for second degree studies for all students
All students are required to pay tuition fees for their second degree studies. More detailed information can be found here.

No further foreign language skills are required.

German language skills
International applicants need documentation of their German language skills. The following certificates are accepted:

• DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) Level 2
• TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) with level 4 in all four parts
• telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule
• Goethe-Zertifikat C1

If you already studied at the University of Konstanz as an Erasmus student, you can be exempt from this requirement, if you successfully passed exams of law courses in German during this time. The degree certificate and language certificate have to be presented in their original form or as certified copies.

Application documents

• Documentation of your academic degree including details on course work. If you have not received your degree certificate by the end of the application deadline, please attach documentation of all your examination results so far;
• Current certificate of enrolment or proof of exmatriculation (if you have studied at a German university, please indicate your 'Fachsemester’ and ‘Hochschulsemester’).

International applicants:

• If your documents are not available in German or English, you will need to have them translated. Please submit a German or English translation of your documents along with the original versions.
• Documentation of German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4, or a language test recognised as equivalent;
• Applicants from China, India and Vietnam: APS certificate issued by the German Embassy of your home country

An application is possible during the following period: 07.05. - 15.07. | 29.11. - 15.01.
