Above all, the master’s programme will intensify your scientific, cultural and language competencies for Eastern Europe. These competencies form the foundation for you to address relevant issues based on current scientific information and research, and to analyse cultural, historical and media processes in Eastern Europe. As a graduate you will be able to apply your acquired knowledge of the greater area of Eastern Europe systematically and comparatively to European and global history as well as to worldwide media and cultural networks.
Typical career prospects include positions in the business and media sectors, or in cultural, political advisory and educational institutions. This programme also provides you with the necessary skills and competencies to continue with doctoral studies.

Stay abroad

During your studies we highly recommend a period of study abroad (usually in the third semester) at one of our Eastern European partner universities. The staff responsible for the study programme, our Student Advice Service and the International Office will support you when planning and carrying out your period of study abroad. There is also a possibility of partial funding for your semester abroad.

• Degree with the grade "good" (2.0) or better of a three-year (or more) study programme at an institution of higher education or 'Berufsakademie' in a subject relevant for the MA Eastern Europe: History - Media (usually: cultural and social sciences, history). Minimum degree: Bachelor of Arts [BA] or equivalent. A selection committee decides on the relevance of your previous study programme for the MA Eastern Europe.
• Good Slavic language skills (level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
• International applicants have to document good German language skills (DSH level 2 or 4 points (or more) in all 4 areas of the TestDaf)
• Letter of motivation and curriculum vitae
• Two letters of reference written by academic teachers

Semester fee
All students enrolled at the University of Konstanz are charged a semester fee each semester, similar to all other German universities. Here you can find the current semester fee and its individual components.

Tuition fees for first degree studies for certain international students
Since winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. The following students are not required to pay tuition fees: citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), doctoral students and certain “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German “Abitur”). Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students in accordance with the university’s “Begabtenbefreiungssatzung” (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). Tuition fees for second degree studies for all students
All students are required to pay tuition fees for their second degree studies. More detailed information can be found here.

Foreign language skills
You have to provide documentation of advanced skills in a Slavic language, level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

German language skills
International applicants additionally need documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4, or a language test recognised as equivalent. The University of Konstanz does not offer preparatory German language courses or approved German language exams. For this reason, you must submit accredited proof of your German language skills along with your application.

Courses are taught in German, in English or a Slavic language. Language of examination is – depending on the exam and agreement – German or English

• Passion for Slavic languages
• You are interested in history and culture in the Slavic language area
• Your ability to express yourself in German and in Russian is very good

Application documents

Application is online only. After you have applied online, please send the following documents to the university:

• Application for admission (can be printed after completing the online application), please attach 1 passport photo;
• Documentation of your academic degree. If you have not received your degree certificate by the end of the application deadline, please attach documentation of all your academic achievements (relevant for your final degree) so far;
• Documentation of your Slavic language skills (level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
• Letter of motivation and curriculum vitae
• 2 letters of reference written by academic teachers
• Current certificate of enrolment or proof of exmatriculation (if you have studied at a German university, please indicate your 'Fachsemester’ and ‘Hochschulsemester’).

International applicants:

• If your documents are not available in German or English, you will need to have them translated. Please submit a German or English translation of your documents along with the original versions.
• Documentation of German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4, or a language test recognised as equivalent
• Applicants from China, India and Vietnam: APS certificate (original) issued by the German Embassy of your home country

An application is possible during the following period: 07.05. - 15.07.
