Career prospects

There is a broad spectrum of work with tasks such as calculating the aerodynamic resistance of a vehicle’s bodywork, or improving the production processes of a software provider. Whilst a bank needs an assessment model for risk management, an insurance company is looking for a market analysis and the evaluation of its own insurance products. By studying mathematics you will acquire the necessary basic methodical qualifications for this, whilst you gain specific specialist knowledge and skills in the various areas of your minor.

In the professional world mathematics in the narrower sense often plays a lesser role, whereas the skills, such as the ability to think in abstract terms, to recognise logical relationships and to formulate models gain in importance. Larger numbers of mathematicians are employed in industry and the commercial sphere, for instance in company development departments and in data processing, in administration departments, insurance companies, banking and the software sector, and in technical and economic service enterprises.

Study structure

During your studies you will focus on certain areas of mathematics. You will choose your area of specialisation from the department’s main research areas (analysis and numerics, real geometry and algebra, stochastic and statistics). In addition to this, you will attend courses in non-mathematical disciplines (e.g. biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, psychology, philosophy, linguistics or economics).

Stay abroad

A period of study abroad in the second or third semester is highly recommended. Equivalent coursework and academic performance assessments acquired during your stay will be recognised. The university promotes study abroad via Erasmus+ and numerous other exchange programmes.

• Successfully completed bachelor's programme in mathematics or a related subject at an institution of higher education or recognised Berufsakademie or equivalent institution (abroad).
• Academic performance assessments in modules that cover 1.) the contents of the basic modules Analysis, Linear Algebra and Practical Mathematics and 2.) the contents of the advanced modules Algebra, Analysis and Numerics and Stochastics of the Bachelor's Programme Mathematics at the University of Konstanz (see module guide BSc Mathematics).
• Passing the admission examination (if applicable) according to § 5 of the admission regulations for the Master's Programme in Mathematics at the University of Konstanz. Applicants who completed their BSc in Mathematics at the University of Konstanz (or have an equivalent degree) and meet the requirements of point 2.), do not have to take the admission examination.
• International applicants need documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-1 or TestDaF 3, or a language test recognised as equivalent.

Semester fee
All students enrolled at the University of Konstanz are charged a semester fee each semester, similar to all other German universities. Here you can find the current semester fee and its individual components.

Tuition fees for first degree studies for certain international students
Since winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. The following students are not required to pay tuition fees: citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), doctoral students and certain “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German “Abitur”). Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students in accordance with the university’s “Begabtenbefreiungssatzung” (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). Tuition fees for second degree studies for all students
All students are required to pay tuition fees for their second degree studies. More detailed information can be found here.

Foreign language skills
You do not have to proof any foreign language skills for this master's programme. However, as large parts of the research literature are written in English, good English skills are highly recommended.

German language skills
International applicants need documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-1 or TestDaF 3. Alternatively, other language tests or school certificates recognized as equivalent can be used as proof of the required German language skills. The University of Konstanz does not offer preparatory German language courses or approved German language exams. For this reason, you must submit accredited proof of your German language skills along with your application.

The teaching and examination languages are German and English.

You should really enjoy the subject and have a definite desire to deepen your mathematical knowledge and skills. You have already demonstrated your endurance and determination by completing your undergraduate degree. Similarly, you have already trained your logical thinking and systemic understanding.

• Documentation of your academic degree including details on course work. If you have not received your degree certificate by the end of the application deadline, please attach documentation of all your examination results so far.
• Documentation of two academic performance assessments in modules that cover 1.) the contents of the basic modules Analysis, Linear Algebra and Practical Mathematics and 2.) the contents of the advanced modules Algebra, Analysis and Numerics and Stochastics of the Bachelor's Programme in Mathematics at the University of Konstanz (see above).
• Documentation of passing the admission examination (if applicable) according to § 5 of the admission regulations of the Master's Programme in Mathematics of the University of Konstanz (see admission requirements);
• Current certificate of enrolment or proof of exmatriculation, if applicable (if you have studied at a German university, please indicate your 'Fachsemester’ and ‘Hochschulsemester’).

International applicants:

• If your documents are not available in German or English, you will need to have them translated. Please submit a German or English translation of your documents along with the original versions.
• Documentation of German language skills, level DSH-1 or TestDaF 3, or a language test recognised as equivalent;
• Applicants from China, India and Vietnam: APS certificate (original) issued by the German Embassy of your home country
