Data-based methods have always played a central role in studies and scientific research, not only in the natural and social sciences, but also increasingly in the humanities. Increasing digitalization also presents a social challenge that requires a skilled response based on the reflective handling of data and information. This is why the University of Konstanz aims to teach all its students to handle data and information, not only technically correctly, but also critically, responsibly and in a well-informed manner.
The new programme "Advanced Data and Information Literacy Track" (ADILT), complements all study programmes with fundamentals of computer science, data processing methods and their legal foundations as well as a reflection on their relevance for society.
Data Literacy Charter of the Stifterverband
The University of Konstanz signs the Data Literacy Charter, which was initiated and published by the Stifterverband with numerous partners in January 2021. It thus identifies itself as one of those universities that regard data literacy as a central competence of all citizens in the 21st century.
The University of Konstanz is committed to taking measures to spread the understanding of data literacy and to strengthen the acquisition of competencies in the field of data literacy.
With the Data Literacy Charter, the signatories express the common understanding of data competencies in the sense of comprehensive data literacy and its importance in educational processes. This understanding is in line with the German government's data strategy and the Berlin Declaration on the Digital Society.
Centre for Human | Data | Society
The Centre for Human | Data | Society is a transdisciplinary research centre focused on understanding the impact of digitalization and datafication on society and individuals. The centre aims to balance the interests of stakeholders and promote human welfare and well-being through a bottom-up approach that critically reflects on traditional concepts of agency, autonomy, and accountability. The centre brings together researchers from various fields to generate unique insights into the complex interrelations between humans, data, and society. Building on the Advanced Data and Information Literacy Track (ADILT) the aim is to establish a joint doctoral | postdoctoral study programme, which is focused on enabling students to deal with new skills in data literacy and information processing and thereby influence society.
Funding and other initiatives in the area of digitalization and teaching
